The Chesterwye Foundation is now raising funds to support the replacement of the Ringgold House, located in Grasonville, MD.

Why Is This Important?

After extensive reserach and experience working in the Grasonville area, it was determined that instead of extensive renovation, complete replacement of the home would be the most effective next step to update the home.

The organization will demolish the existing structure and build a new one on the existing footprint.

The home will feature an open floorplan, an additional fourth bedroom, wheelchair accessible entrances, wheelchair accessible bathrooms, and apply energy efficient and modern building systems.

The home will support four individuals living independently in Queen Anne’s County, offering 24/7 support.

History of the Ringgold Home – Our FIRST Residential Home

In 1975, our first residential home was established out of necessity. Mrs. Carrie Ringgold had died, leaving behind her disabled son, Bob. The home, located in Chester, that Bob had lived in all his life, was maintained for him with lots of community help. The ARC took over the management and financial responsibility, and the first “Alternate Living Unit” in Maryland was started in Queen Anne’s County. There were no public funds in the beginning, so two other men who needed homes moved in with Bob. The men contributed part of their SSI checks, and the ARC provided the rest. A “live-in” house counselor was hired to run the home.

Following the death of Bob Ringgold, using funds collected from community fundraising as well as the sale of the original Ringgold home, the Chesterwye Foundation purchased and renovated a new home on Grasonville Cemetery Road. After renovation in 1989, the men from Henryton moved into this new home. This home was eventually named the ‘Ringgold House’ in memory of Bob and Mrs. Carrie Ringgold.
